The National Park Service is conducting a small controlled burn to see how it was when the Indians used to do it. It's just two acres in Pinnacles, but it was started by flint by a tribal elder. In this particular case, it is to help with the deer grass used for weaving.
Some day, maybe the NPS will engage the tribes to manage the Yosemite Valley floor again. Apparently, it is not what it once was, according to my reading. The massive stands of small trees there now did not exist during the times when Indian tribes managed the land. When the Indians once again manage controlled burns on floor of the Yosemite Valley, then that will be great progress. Still, this is a very interesting project.
